Training your german shepherd in 2019 has never been more easy. The vast amounts of information at your fingertips should help you get things going super fast right? Being able to type into youtube "How to train your german shepherd" should find your results to help you out but instead what you find is a huge contradiction between videos on what you should and shouldn't do. So lets just take a moment and fully consider what it is we are wanting to achieve with our dogs. If you are like most people you are wanting a well adjusted, behaved dog that is full of character and not a robot. So here is the good news. Im going to give you some simple tips to get you started off properly.
I want to introduce you to Rori a german shepherd that has come into our board and train program. He came to us because he will not stop being reactive to dog and people and constantly barking. So here is what im doing with him.
1 Build desire to work with my by picking up the food bowl and throwing it out. So instead of using his food bowl and wasting that opportunity ill be using all his daily feeding into a few session. This will give him the chance to work for his food while at the same time building value to work with with.
2 Teaching him to work on a treadmill is really fun for me and fun for the dogs once they learn and get confident walking on a moving floor. Any time you start to teach them how to walk you need to take it slowly. Here is a video you can watch on how i start dogs off. CLICK HERE TO WATCH. Using a treadmill is a great way to exercise but in a structured way. Remember you are not looking to actually make them run fast on this but only at a steady pace for a gradually longer time. I start of as little as 2 mins and then build up to 20 mins.
3. leash skills this is simply i teach the dogs to respond to direction work with the lead. So when i pull towards the right and the dog is on my left i want them to go with it and follow along. I can then mark and reward that decision to follow it along. Teaching dogs to respond to direction changed by small amounts of lead direction pressure works wonders for teaching loose lead walking.
4 We use lots of place work with dogs. Place work is teaching a dog to go onto a dog bed and then teaching them to stay on it in a laying position until we let them off. Simply this starts to show the dog that once on the bed its time to relax.
5 Threshold are any doorway, opening that leads into what could be a dangerous area such as the road out the front. This could be in your home, office or even your car. So teaching your dog to WAIT and waiting for permission from you to invite them past is the best way to go about this. To create this you can use simple leash pressure pop backwards when the dog stops you can mark and reward. wait a moment.. you step outside and wait a little longer then invite them through every now and then.
So to recap use your dogs food to teach new behaviours and a way you can do lots of repetitions of what ever it is you want to teach. Give yourself and the dog the gift of daily practice. This will build good habits and a bond you will see the fruits of every time you go out.. You know why??? well its because YOU have become rewarding. Another way is for you to become fun to be around. Run away a little and have them chase you. Give them a pat, some food or toss the ball.. But all good things come from you. Add structure into your daily routine such as leash walking (With not leash pulling from them), use treadmills and place boards (Raised dog bed). Have patience and have some fun.

Crate training is one of the most useful things you can start teaching your dog. Think about this. You buy a puppy and want to toilet train him so where do you start? Well strict schedule but guess what you use… Yes you use a crate so your puppy is not making mistakes. The moment you bring him out of his crate you take him to his potty spot. If your dog needs to travel the safest way is in a secure crate. If your dog needs to be at the vet for overnight stay then guess what they will be sleeping in, yes a crate.. So how can we get started.
1. find a crate big enough your dog.
2. you can use food each and every time your dog goes into their crate
3. practice going in and out lots
4. lock the door and open it expecting them to wait.
I made a video with a session we did with this young Bull Terrier. Take a look and listen out for the tips to crate training.

American bullies for the most part are an absolutely amazing breed. They do come in a few different classes so check up what class would suit you best and also have a look at the energy requirements you need and select the right breeder for that. Www.diamondcrossbullies.com are American Bully Breeders in Australia and are one of foundation breeders to bring them to Australia.
The Old Fashioned Bull dog was a fierce, courageous animal used in the sports of bear and
bull baiting as early as the mid sixteenth century
In 1935 the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was recognized by the Kennel Club in England and enthusiasts were able to conduct conformation matches. The sport of dogfighting had long been made illegal and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier had evolved into a dog of such temperament as to make him a fine pet and companion and a worthy show dog.
The dog which this produced, averaging between 30 and 45 pounds, became the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Is super important to start your staffy from the moment you get them. It does not matter if you get them at 8 Weeks, 8 Months or 8 Years old. Training starts the moment you bring them in the car.
What better way to start your relationship then with hand feeding your staffy. Training and building a bond with a dog start with food, shelter and structure. Provide those things and you will end up with a super have staffy.
I love crates for dogs to sleep in at night and for some time out during the day. This give them a safe and secure place to call their own and a place they can go to be alone if it gets to much with kids, guest etc. Make their crate something they love to go into. You can do this by feeding them i that crate, tossing treats in there, place a chewing bone for them to have fun with while in there. And yes. You do have to close the door. they will be fine and give you more from it. During the day i would not leave them in there for longer than 4 hours. Less for puppies as they need to pee and poop. For adults the same thing. At night they can go in there from bed time 8.30pm or so till the next morning. Once again puppies will need to go out during the day. But this will also give you a perfect tool to house train your puppy or adult staffy.
Make sure its safe and secure. Weather its a dog house or under the covers you need to make sure its weather appropriate. Warm in winter, cool in summer.
Build the relationship with food, pats and playing games. Start shaping the behaviour you actually want. Teach them how to sit, lay down, come to you with food at the start and we can always add some (Well you still have to do it) after.
Take them everywhere you would want them to go when adults. If already grown then take them with you but make sure with adult there is no pulling on lead, no sniffing the ground or stopping to pee or poop until you tell them. Yes that means a grown dog can wait for 10-15 mins to do any of that in every walk.. you are leading not them.
Wheather you like it or not dogs follow leadership or if you wont give it to them they will show you leadership and you will be subordinate to them. From the start we start to shape behaviour with food.. But it can not stop there. We must create leadership but having them wait for things such as food, not pull on lead, staying on their bed until you tell them its ok to come off for starters. Each dog will require something based around these simple ideas but tailoring to an adult dog will require some guidance.
This is my favourite thing in dogs. To many people create these dogs with hi anxious behaviours, over the top excitement thinking its a happy loyal dog. Could not be further from truth. Creating a calm, loyal animal takes a little work each day with what i have written above. Follow at least this basic outline and start to see the beauty in a dog / human relationship.

I want you to go and watch this video and share it. While this happend in IDAHO USA is this what we will allow the goverments to do? Will we allow this kind of danger in our own backyards. For something that they feel was to control wild animals like Wolves or Coyotes how is it these residents were never told about and almost ended up killing this boy.
On the week of March 18th 2017 a 14 year old boy Canyon Mansfield was out taking his Golden Labrador for a walk just behind the family home.
The boy noticed a sprinkler looking thing on the ground and him and his dog walked over to check things out. Well as he went in to look at what it was and he slightly touched it it EXPLODED and an Orange Gas came out of it. This gas went straight into Caseys face. The dog immediately could not see and "had red stuff coming out of his mouth" as Canyon Said.
This was CYANIDE! Are you hearing this? WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON!
“300 yards from this swingset next to my house there were 2 cyanide bombs. It kills anything. It almost killed my child and it did kill my dog,” Mark said. “I don’t want it to kill my neighbors.”
This boy is lucky to be alive!
