How to gently teach good behaviour using a e-collar also knows as a remote collar
When i was about 13-15 i dug deep into reading books on dog training. One of the first books on dog training i got from the local library was by the Monks of New Skete so fast forward over 25 years and im reading another book by the Monks Of New Skete and Marc Goldberg.
This book here is great for any novice to experienced dog trainer with the gold nuggets inside. I loved learning about the practical approach to training dogs with collars and leads and then moving onto the e collar transformations. There is a full 6 week program inside so you can follow along with your dog and their training step by step.
Canine Revolution private lessons, board and training and group lessons are so easy to get started with and changing so many dog owners lives.
Canine Revolution has expanded into Coffs Harbour and now offering their private, board and train and group training lessons to the greater Coffs Harbour Dog Owners.
During the time here we have already worked with staffys, germans shepherds, kelpies, labradoodles to name a few and guess what?! they are the same as in other locations. They have the same challenges, the dog pull on leash, they are reactive to other dogs, you are not able to get them to come back when call. If this sounds like you then we should work together and train your beautiful dog.

Isn’t it funny how certain terms like Dog Whisperer catch on. It started with Cesar Millan doing his TV show and love him or not people know who he is. Now he is not what this post is about but the term that people like to use.
Now lets think about a dog that is so distracted from their owner but so focused on the world around them. You could be standing there but your dog and they are at the end of the lead with their nose up, eyes forward trying to take in as much of the world around them. They want to go over to every single tree or grass patch, when they see dogs they get so excited its really getting so hard to walk them. Im sure you know this kind of dog lol. You want to take them for just an easy walk but they have no plans on giving you any attention or even listen to what you have to say.
These are the kinds of dogs we get called in to work with. So this is how is generally goes when we get to meet, after some hellos and getting to know you and your dog we start to show you a few things on how we work with the dog and you start to notice how the dogs begin to respond in a way that is more focused on us especially if we find their thing.. the thing that we use to create the ignition, the interest the desire to work for us. They begin to focus and then calm making the interaction of a well behaved dog. Sure enough thats when we hear those little words “WOW you are the Dog Whisperer” now i know Australian’s like to joke and play around so its pretty cool and funny and we all have a laugh. I know what they are thinking though when they say things like that. It looks like it does not take a lot of effort to get results.
I do want to share with you something else about this, when i ask you what a Whisper is or why people would say Whisperer what does it make you think about? To me i start to think there is less talking, a quieter moment and interaction. This is exactly whats going on with the interactions between the dog and myself so it looks easy to the outside eyes.
Below im going to give you some key points i like to use and you can start to use them too.
How to Become Your Own Dog Whisperer (Tongue in Cheek)
Less Talking – Put a sock in your mouth or a gummy bear
Find what ignites your dog – So make a list and these could be, Food, Toys, Pats. Use one such as food and create engagement over a few days. Below is your start to using what they want to create engagement.
Get a proper lead with NO Stretchy Material in it. Now use it in the way that will create a calm relaxed walk. (Our Trainers Can Help You With This)
Remember STOP Talking and petting your dog so much but pat them when they do something you love such as jump onto their bed, or sit calmly, look into your eye. DO NOT pat when they are being crazy. If you pat when they are hyper or anxious you are saying to them its ok do more of it!
learn to lead instead of being a BOSS..
It does take some practice so keep at it and your dog will be better behaved, better trained and you are going to get called the Dog Whisperer by your friends too hahah.
A back story. Many years ago i was breeding American Staffordshire Terriers and have an amazing program running. We were dealing with people around Australia and had other dog breeders wanting us to stud our amstaffs to their females. So there we were having a great time and had dogs coming and going from the property.
This one time we had a friend drop off a female that stayed with us overnight. We did the breeding that same day and the next before her owner came over and picked her back up.
Well about a week later i started seeing my dogs scratching and before i new it i had an outbreak of FLEAS.
So i quickly set off to buy flea treatments to put on our 7 dogs (Caching for the Pet Store). After a few days it seemed to help but the fleas came back. Why were the fleas coming back?
This was horrible not only because my dogs were itchy but because they spread to the bedding area and into the house! This was absolutely YUK!
So now we have an even bigger problem with fleas because not only did the dogs get fleas but the fleas spread to other areas of the property. This meant that the fleas were breeding. A friend of mine had put me onto a product they used. Now i'm sorry but this isn't very organic approach to removing fleas from the property and probably not very good for the health of my family but we had to get these not only under control but really i wanted to kill the fleas.
I came across something call IGR Insect Growth Regulator which is an ingredient that will basically kill the full lifecycle of not just fleas but other things like roaches. Here in Australia you can go into coles or wollies and check out the flea bombs that should contact that ingredient. If you are in America or use Amazon you can also use this link here for some of the product directly.
We had to set off a few flea bombs inside the home which you can imagine wasnt pretty.. I kept thinking about the residue that would be left on objects so please if you do set off one of these bombs get out of the home for a few hours and then wife over the surfaces such as your kitchen benches etc. Im not a chemical specialist so follow the instructions really. Anyhow this did kill the fleas. Our dogs were given another treatment each and even the yard needed to be sprayed. This is a link to one i found also in Australia . CLICK HERE
I made it a rule from then on that if your dog was coming any where near the property you need to have a proper treatment before!
Some products i have used since then has been Bravecto and NEXTGARD. Please speak with your veterinarian about any medication you give your dogs so you are aware of the good bad and the ugly of them.

We have jumped into 2020 like a labrador into water. Having a good recall for your dog is such an important command to have. You saw in the video above how good it can be when you have taught it correctly.
Here are a few tips you can do to get a better recall. Remember in training you must have the behaviour happening first and then you add the command.
1. Find what motivates your dogs such as balls, toys, food
2. Daily – Move away from your dog so your dog follows you and you reward as tey get to you (Spend 5 mins on this) 3. Toss a treat between your legs so they run through. As they run through move away and turn around to face them and get ready for them to start coming back your way. As they do say YES and toss another treat under your legs. Repeat for a few mins.
4. Play hide and go seek but start with an easy hide. Call their name and as they find you say YES and reward with Food, Tug Toy or Ball.
All the above are just a few ways to start building a positive association for the dog being around you and for coming to you.
If you want to know more about how we can help you teach your dog a good recall or how to fix other behaviour issues you can book directly into this program or even schedule a free call with us. CLICK HERE
Training your german shepherd in 2019 has never been more easy. The vast amounts of information at your fingertips should help you get things going super fast right? Being able to type into youtube "How to train your german shepherd" should find your results to help you out but instead what you find is a huge contradiction between videos on what you should and shouldn't do. So lets just take a moment and fully consider what it is we are wanting to achieve with our dogs. If you are like most people you are wanting a well adjusted, behaved dog that is full of character and not a robot. So here is the good news. Im going to give you some simple tips to get you started off properly.
I want to introduce you to Rori a german shepherd that has come into our board and train program. He came to us because he will not stop being reactive to dog and people and constantly barking. So here is what im doing with him.
Key points i want to achieve
Build desire to work with me by using reward and food
Teach him to walk on a treadmill
Teach him calmness on command
work on threshold - Not rush through doors, out of cars
1 Build desire to work with my by picking up the food bowl and throwing it out. So instead of using his food bowl and wasting that opportunity ill be using all his daily feeding into a few session. This will give him the chance to work for his food while at the same time building value to work with with.
2 Teaching him to work on a treadmill is really fun for me and fun for the dogs once they learn and get confident walking on a moving floor. Any time you start to teach them how to walk you need to take it slowly. Here is a video you can watch on how i start dogs off. CLICK HERE TO WATCH. Using a treadmill is a great way to exercise but in a structured way. Remember you are not looking to actually make them run fast on this but only at a steady pace for a gradually longer time. I start of as little as 2 mins and then build up to 20 mins.
3. leash skills this is simply i teach the dogs to respond to direction work with the lead. So when i pull towards the right and the dog is on my left i want them to go with it and follow along. I can then mark and reward that decision to follow it along. Teaching dogs to respond to direction changed by small amounts of lead direction pressure works wonders for teaching loose lead walking.
4 We use lots of place work with dogs. Place work is teaching a dog to go onto a dog bed and then teaching them to stay on it in a laying position until we let them off. Simply this starts to show the dog that once on the bed its time to relax.
5 Threshold are any doorway, opening that leads into what could be a dangerous area such as the road out the front. This could be in your home, office or even your car. So teaching your dog to WAIT and waiting for permission from you to invite them past is the best way to go about this. To create this you can use simple leash pressure pop backwards when the dog stops you can mark and reward. wait a moment.. you step outside and wait a little longer then invite them through every now and then.
So to recap use your dogs food to teach new behaviours and a way you can do lots of repetitions of what ever it is you want to teach. Give yourself and the dog the gift of daily practice. This will build good habits and a bond you will see the fruits of every time you go out.. You know why??? well its because YOU have become rewarding. Another way is for you to become fun to be around. Run away a little and have them chase you. Give them a pat, some food or toss the ball.. But all good things come from you. Add structure into your daily routine such as leash walking (With not leash pulling from them), use treadmills and place boards (Raised dog bed). Have patience and have some fun.
Crate training is one of the most useful things you can start teaching your dog. Think about this. You buy a puppy and want to toilet train him so where do you start? Well strict schedule but guess what you use… Yes you use a crate so your puppy is not making mistakes. The moment you bring him out of his crate you take him to his potty spot. If your dog needs to travel the safest way is in a secure crate. If your dog needs to be at the vet for overnight stay then guess what they will be sleeping in, yes a crate.. So how can we get started.
1. find a crate big enough your dog.
2. you can use food each and every time your dog goes into their crate
3. practice going in and out lots
4. lock the door and open it expecting them to wait.
I made a video with a session we did with this young Bull Terrier. Take a look and listen out for the tips to crate training.
American bullies for the most part are an absolutely amazing breed. They do come in a few different classes so check up what class would suit you best and also have a look at the energy requirements you need and select the right breeder for that. Www.diamondcrossbullies.com are American Bully Breeders in Australia and are one of foundation breeders to bring them to Australia.
